The Cal-Israel Innovation Expo was hosted by the TAMID Group in partnership with Blackstone Launchpad USC. Thirty-four startups were present at the expo, with some looking for employees and interns, and others looking for funding to take their ideas to the next level. These budding companies showcased innovations in areas such as medical, energy and water conservation, mobile and cyber technology and agribusiness.

Rep. Royce Named Congressional App Challenge Co-Chair

Washington, D.C. – Today, the Congressional Internet Caucus and the Internet Education Foundation announced the new Congressional Co-Chairsfor the 2016 Congressional App Challenge (CAC), U.S. Representatives Ed Royce (R-Calif.) and Seth Moulton (D-Mass.):

“As Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and a representative from the world’s innovation capital, I know how important a STEM proficient workforce is to the United States remaining an economic powerhouse. I encourage all of my colleagues to participate in the Congressional App Challenge, an excellent opportunity to recognize talented young people learning the skills being used to build the future,” said Rep. Royce.

"We are currently on track to reach a million unfilled programming jobs by 2020. These jobs and skills are crucial to the innovation economy," said Rep. Moulton. "I'm excited to serve as co-chair of the Congressional App Challenge with Rep. Ed Royce to encourage students across the country to learn how to code. This challenge is a nationwide effort to open up those opportunities to students in every community, and I look forward to seeing what they create."

Congressional App Challenge is a bipartisan congressional initiative to improve student engagement in coding and computer science.

If investing in hope could be trademarked, two Israeli entrepreneurs – Forsan Hussein and Ami Dror – would hold the patent. The two cofounders and managing partners of Zaitoun Ventures– a hybrid investment firm that invests in companies with diverse human capital – say their strategy is proving to be a winning formula.

“We wanted to create a business that inspires hope but also fulfills its mission to make money. It’s an investment company with values, with a soul,” Hussein tells ISRAEL21c. “People like us have a responsibility to do something big.” In 2014, Dror and Hussein, who knew each other for years, decided to join forces and create Zaitoun Ventures. They have raised $5 million and invested some $17 million in Israeli startups so far.

The name of the company translates from Hebrew and Arabic as “olive tree.” “The olive tree is a symbol. It’s a story of peace. We Arabs and Jews have a Mediterranean connectedness. There’s something that bonds us. Maybe this is the symbol for the future,” says Hussein. Hussein and Dror are hardly the only ones tapping in to Israeli high-tech. But their focus on diversity — in terms of faith, ethnicities, lifestyle – is unique. “Corporate studies show that diversity is beneficial to a company,” says Hussein.  “We believe innovation comes from diversity. The more diverse your company is, the more powerful it is,” says Dror.

With everything from state-of-the-art drone prototypes to game-changing renewable energy systems, the inaugural Cal-Israel Innovation Expo and Conference at the University of San Diego delivered on its promise of being a wonderful showcase for next-generation technologies, both nationally and internationally.

Hosted by the Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering, the expo featured the latest and greatest products and services from more than three-dozen technology companies based in Israel and California. Attendees had a front-row seat to a host of innovative developments in medical, computer and cyber technologies, as well as energy, water conservation and agribusiness.

“We are honored to host this premiere event that showcases emerging technologies to power the future and foster global innovation, cross-cultural education, and professional development worldwide,” said Chell Roberts, dean of the Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering. “At USD, innovation is essential to our success, and this expo can only support that connection.”

New technology from Israel is the topic of a two-day event in early March at the University of San Diego in Linda Vista.

From drone makers to life savers, the Cal-Israel Innovation Expo and Conference, hosted by the University of San Diego Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering, will showcase the next generation of Israeli technologies.

The Expo takes place March 8 and 9 and features developments in medical, computer and cyber technologies, along with energy and water conservation, agribusiness and more.

The commerce and education event connects Israeli start-ups and companies with students, faculty, investors, business leaders, strategic partners, and government delegations. Speakers include San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Gary Jacobs, founder of Jacobs Investment Company LLC.
